Design for impact - Improving mobility and accessibility for urban India
A pilot initiative in Thane
In September 2013, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) with EMBARQ India initiated the Junction Improvement Project along three major intersections located along the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) in Thane – Teen Haath Naka, Nitin Junction and Cadbury Junction. High volume of traffic along the EEH (on flyovers and at-grade) as well as that moving east-west within the suburb converges at the selected junctions causing multiple issues. EMBARQ India carried out the site analysis and developed design solutions with inputs from TMC.
The proposal aims to address traffic and safety related problems observed at these intersections - lane imbalance and misalignment, excessive turning radii and resultant speeding, lack of designated pedestrian crossings, long signal cycles, excessive junction area, traffic congestion etc. The improvements proposed under this project also aim to serve as a template for developing other intersections within Thane that share similar characteristics.
